Plant Daddy:
Thanks again for taking the time to check out this blog.My hope in writing, is to give you a chance to step into my world outside of just my photography. As of the last couple months I’ve developed a big obsession with plants, specifically Cactus + Tropical plants. When growing up I was surrounded by plants inside my home and outside. I never appreciated having them inside the house until recently. My plant collection is currently up to 42 plants and to be honest I’m trying to not buy any more. The struggle is real!!
Backstory:
In the past year I have been dealing with some health complications and as of now we still don’t know what is happening to my body. Having indoor plants originally started out of a desire to have control of taking care of something, because of the lack of ability to take care of my own body. This obsession started off sinful and provided me with a false sense of comfort. I had to address my obsession at the heart level before adding to my plant collection. After I began to trust my heart not to find a false sense of comfort in plants, I continued to learn more and more about plants. This might sound strange but owning plants is both calming and inspiring so that always helps my creative flow. Plants are so freaking cool and Ive really enjoyed learning from local greenhouses and other plant people. One day I think it would be amazing to own a greenhouse to some degree, maybe even having a chance to do pop up shows in local stores and farmers markets.
My favorite plant:
“Satin Pothos”
I have a couple plants that have fun stories to them, however if I had to pick a “favorite” plant as of right now it would be my “Satin Pothos” they are so cool and in my experience they are hard to find I picked mine up in a store in Houston.
Satin Pothos Care Guide:
Origin: Southeast Asia
Light: Bright Indirect light
Temp: Warm and humid climates. 40-50% humidity if possible.
Propagation: Easy, can be grown in water or soil. Make sure to take cutting from the Node.
Soil: All purpose potting soil
Repotting: In the spring for best results.
How should I get started:
Ill leave a couple tips of things to keep in mind if you are wanting to get started on adding some plants inside your house.
1.Start with a small amount of plants and learn to take care of them. When you are at a greenhouse and see 20 amazing indoor plants I recommend taking it easy and only picking 1 or 2 of them out. Plants in some ways have personalities and can be demanding in the care that they need. So before you bite off more than you can chew I always recommend taking it slow at first.
2.Buy plants for the available light you have in your house. I stand by this rule unless you are wanting to start adding grow lights in your house (which Im not crazy about the way that they look so I stay away from those). Look at what kind of light you have available in your house and then look for a plant that will work well in that space. Don’t buy a low light plant and toss it in the brightest part of your home. You will be disappointed if you do.
3.One of the biggest tips I use, happens before the plant even makes it to my home. When you are at your local greenhouse or garden center make sure to take note that you are buying an already healthy plant. One thing I look for is new growth, this normally indicates that the plant is semi happy and is in a position to grow well if it is continued to be given the right conditions to grow. Also take note of any bugs on the plant at the store, if you see any maybe try to look for another plant.
I could talk your ear off about plants and some day soon I might release a plant tour video. Feel free to reach out if you have any plant questions or if you want to go pick out your first plant together.
Thanks
